JOSEF ALBERS – INTERACTION OF COLORS
Als Künstler erlangte Josef Albers Weltruhm, doch war er zeitlebens auch als Lehrer und Forschender von immenser Bedeutung für nachfolgende Generationen von Künstlern.
Mit zahlreichen druckgraphischen Arbeiten, einigen Zeichnungen und Entwürfen auf Papier öffnet die Galerie Boisserée in ihrer Einzelausstellung einen Blick auf die unterschiedlichen Schaffensphasen des Künstlers.
Albers Kunst war immer auch wissenschaftliches Experiment. Die Erfahrung lehrte ihn, dass in der visuellen Wahrnehmung ein Widerspruch zwischen physikalischer Wirklichkeit und psychischer Wirkung besteht, und so war es sein Bestreben, beim Betrachter Zweifel an der Wahrnehmung zu wecken – ihn zu genauerem Sehen anzuregen. "Ich will Augen öffnen. " Dieses Ziel verfolgte er mit großer Konsequenz. Jahrzehntelang arbeitete er an seinen Variationen, um die Wechselwirkungen der Farbe, ihre Interaktionen und Interdependenzen, zum Ausdruck zu bringen, aber auch die Interaktion zwischen Bildfläche und imaginärem Raum.
In den 1950er Jahren entstanden die ersten Bilder der Serie "Homage to the Square", die am Ende seines Lebens über 2.000 Werke umfasste. In ihr untersuchte er in immer gleicher Grundstruktur des quadratischen Bildes die Wechselwirkungen von Farbe. Die Anmerkung des Künstlers "Ich male keine Quadrate, ich male Farbbeziehungen" kann man als prägnantesten Kommentar zu dieser Werkgruppe verstehen. Das Quadrat war ihm "nur ein Tablett" - auf dem er seine Farben ausbreitete. Je nach Kombination der Farben wirken die Farben blasser oder leuchtender, dunkler oder heller, treten Flächen in den Hintergrund oder scheinen zu schweben, scheinen sich zu den Seiten hin auszudehnen. "Nie sind diese Phänomene aber an eine bestimmte Farbe gebunden – sie können von Bild zu Bild variieren" (Ulrike Growe). Oberflächeneffekte und Texturen gibt es keine. "Es leuchtet ein, dass Albers, um diese Wirkung zu erzielen, besonders häufig den Siebdruck in seiner Graphik verwendet hat. Dieses graphische Verfahren lässt den Eindruck entstehen, als ob die Farbe mit dem Papier eine unauflösliche Einheit bildet. Es entsteht eben nicht die Situation von 'Farbe auf etwas', sondern 'Farbe gleich Trägermedium' " (Siegfried Gohr, Katalogtext).
In der Serie der "Structural Constellations" aber auch in den zahlreichen Prägedrucken und den Acrylarbeiten wird die dynamische Interaktion zwischen Bildfläche und imaginärem Raum zum Thema.
Sein Einfluss auf die Moderne Kunst in Europa und Nordamerika beruht neben seinem herausragenden Werk auch auf seinen Lehrtätigkeiten in Deutschland und den USA. Seine Vorlesungen bringen all seine Lebens- und Schaffenserfahrung zusammen, zugleich stellen sie die Quintessenz seiner jahrzehntelangen Auseinandersetzung mit dem Sehen als künstlerischem Wahrnehmungsprozess dar.
Josef Albers wurde 1888 im Ruhrgebiet, in Bottrop, geboren. 88 Jahre später starb er in New Haven, Connecticut, USA. Das Exil in den USA wurde trotz mancher Verluste künstlerisch wie biografisch zu einer erfüllten Zeit.
Seine Arbeiten sind wie eine Schule des Sehens und in ihrer Aussage und Wirkung von zeitloser Gültigkeit.
Die Ausstellung ist ab dem 24. April 2021 zu sehen.

Biography
Josef Albers
Josef Albers (Bottrop 1888–1976 New Haven, Connecticut), explored the artistic dimension of colour and the relationship of colours to each other. Around 1950, he found the ideal form for colour in the square.
Following his academic training in Berlin, Essen and Munich, he began studying at the Bauhaus in Weimar in 1920 and took on a teaching position there in 1923. In 1932, when Mies van der Rohe was named head of the Bauhaus, Albers became his deputy. When the Bauhaus was closed by the National Socialists in 1933, he was appointed to the Black Mountain College in Ashville, North Carolina and moved to the USA with his wife, the famous Bauhaus weaver Anni Albers. The move to the United States marked the beginning of a new period in the artist’s career.
Albers experimented with the interaction of colours, forms, lines and surfaces and found in colour a comprehensive artistic means that was capable of expressing everything.
His famous series Homage to the Square was the result of his reflections on theories of perception, which Albers formulated in numerous writings and interviews. The individual works from this series consist of ostensibly superimposed squares of different colours and colour nuances. Here, Albers deals with the interaction of the colours with each other, which can infinitely change their effect through mere juxtaposition.
In his work, Albers was both a painter and a philosopher of colours. As a teacher as well as an artist, he was ground-breaking for an entire generation of American artists. Op Art, Kinetic Art, Colour Field Painting, New Abstraction and Minimal Art were all influenced by his work.
Josef Albers participated in the first and fourth documenta exhibitions in 1955 and 1968; he was awarded altogether fourteen honorary doctorate degrees; in 1968, he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and in 1973 to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 1968, he was also awarded the Grand Cross of Merit of the Order ‘Pour le Mérite’. In 1971, he was the first living artist to be honoured with a retrospective at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. That same year, he and his wife established ‘The Josef and Anni Albers Foundation’, a non-profit organization aimed at furthering ‘the revelation and evocation of vision through art.’
