The passionate search of beauty in what may seemingly be banal, anodyne or decadent, is another keystone that helps build this artist statement.

Eager to convey the lived feelings to the spectator with the most possible complexity and fidelity, Mellado has carried in-depth investigations for the last years in the field of digital capture, treatment and output. The careful selection of the media and the printing technique allow for the dissolution of the thin line that separates photography from hyperrealistic painting.

He has been awarded more that a hundred times and his works belong to many important museums and collections, participating regularly into some of the top art fairs inside and outside his country.

His book on technique "High Quality Digital Photography" has been best seller in Spain.

José María Mellado

In his photographs, José María Mellado (b. in Almería in 1966) develops a visual language in which the question of the nature of time is always palpable. He encounters people in the structures in which they live, and instead of large landmarks he finds small symbols to capture the mood.

The photographed decay of the buildings tells of past times. It seems to be only a matter of time before the last stony witnesses of once glorious eras disappear forever. What remains are places of solitude, silence and melancholy.

At the age of fourteen, Mellado had already discovered his passion for photography. However, he initially studied computer science and received his first awards for his photojournalistic work. But his mastery is evident when he turns from the documentary to the artistic and uses digital technology to portray landscapes, architecture and industrial landscapes, as well as urban and rural life in photo essayist fashion.

Competing reality and composition create enigmatic images. Known things seem strangely foreign. But it is precisely this alienation that lends the photographed sites their poetry. José María Mellado’s works are characterised by the sensitisation and expansion of our perception of an ostensibly familiar reality.
