Text by Patrick Hughes relating to the work "Our House":
"When I was an art student in 1959 we were taught along Bauhaus lines. The Bauhaus way is the rational way to run an art school, and several English schools and art teachers followed that way.
My second favourite is Paul Klee, who exemplified the Bauhaus aesthetic. He typically started with a form, a shape, a visual system, and then saw, for instance, how triangles could be made into yachts at sea,
marks on lines could be made into ancient hieroglyphics, how an assortment of squares could be made into imaginary towns. I still cling to Klee’s system in that I have shapes made first and then decide what to turn them into.
Tom Wolfe wrote a book called From Bauhaus to Our House (I have borrowed a part of his title) about the influence of Gropius from the Bauhaus on the architecture of America.
In my painting I have put the skyscraper indoors among the bookcases so you can see it. From the Bauhaus professors I have chosen a Paul Klee Bauhaus poster, Oscar Schlemmer’s painting of students on a staircase,
a Kandinsky, who lived next door to Klee in a Bauhaus studio and a Feininger – he was a cartoonist before he became a fine artist. On the far left Hans Arp had something of Klee’s spirit to make subtly representational art out of abstraction.
Beckman and Ernst seemed to be in the spirit of the piece.
And beyond all this culture is the force of nature, the timeless sea."
